The inhibitory effect of tetracycline on osteogenesis in organ culture.

چکیده
Two characteristics of the tetracycline-group antibiotics have recently focused the special attention of teratologists: these drugs are known to pass readily across the placental'barrier' (Charles, 1954; Frost & Villanueva, 1960; Gibbons & Reichelderfer, 1960; Hughes, Lee & Flood, 1965; Simpson, Burnette & Bawden, 1967), and they are incorporated into the foetal skeleton, where they may remain for long periods and can be detected owing to their brilliant fluorescence (Rail, Loo, Lane & Kelly, 1957; Milch, Rail & Tobie, 1957, 1958; Bevelander, Rolle & Cohlan, 1961; Urist & Ibsen, 1963; Michelson, 1964). The question of whether they exert a harmful effect on bone formation and mineralization in mammals, however, is still a matter of controversy. There is no doubt that tetracycline interferes with mineralization of the skeletal tissue in certain lower vertebrates (Bevelander, Goldberg & Nakahara, 1960; Bevelander & Cohlan, 1962), and prevents calcification of mammalian bones in organ culture (Saxen, 1966«, b). Reports of in vivo studies in mammalian species have yielded more confusing results. In 1957, Filippi & Mela reported minor skeletal malformations in mouse foetuses after maternal tetracycline administration, and later Cohlan, Bevelander & Tiamsic (1963) observed depression of the growth rate of the long bones of premature children receiving high doses of tetracycline. Correspondingly, a reduction of the foetal weight has been reported to result from administration of tetracycline to the mother (Bevelander & Cohlan, 1962; Cohlan et al. 1963). On the other hand, neither experiments on rats nor observations on children have confirmed all these reports, as Oxytetracycline appears to have no adverse effects on mineralization (Chu, O'Hara & Keitel, 1963; Likins & Pakis, 1965). In addition to differences in the dose and mode of administration, these conflicting results may also be due to differences between the various members of the

Effect of Lithium Chloride on Proliferation and Bone Differentiation of Rat Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Culture
Objective(s) It is believed that the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation and proliferation are the results of activation of wnt signaling pathway. On the other hand, lithium chloride is reported to be able to activate this pathway. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lithium on in vitro proliferation and bone differentiation of marrow-derived MSC. Materials and ...

Background: Researchers are seeking new plant compounds as an alternative to chemical drugs and antibiotics due to the increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics. This study investigated the antibacterial effect of Plantago ovata and Lallemantia iberica L. seed extracts on some foodborne human pathogenic bacteria. Materials and Methods: Disk-diffusion antibiotic sensitivity te...
متن کاملDetermination of antibiotic susceptibility and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the Propionibacterium acnes to the prevalent antibiotics in the treatment of Acne vulgaris
ABSTRACTPropionibacterium acnes is propounded as one of the significant factors in occurrence of acne. Today, due to development of the antibiotic resistance, most of the acne treatments are faced with failure. In order to determine the antibiotic resistance of the P.acnes strains isolated from the patients with acne, this research has been carried out. 70 samples collected using microbial cult...

Introduction: Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases affecting chondrogenesis or the function of articular cartilage. The purpose of the present study was to find the effect of soybean extract on reduction of detoriation effects of oxidativestress in embryonic chondrogenesis in vitro. Methods: In order to separate ectoderm from mesenchyme, the limb buds ...
متن کاملP-173: Evaluation of The Follicular Growth after Mouse Ovarian Organ Culture in The Medium Supplemented with Growth Differentiation Factor-9B (GDF-9B)
Background: Growth differentiation factor -9B (GDF-9B) is an oocyte derived growth factor, this protein is essential for development of ovarian follicles and act mainly by binding to its receptor on the surface of granulosa cells. The effect of this factor on the growth of follicles in various developmental stages particularly primordial and primary follicles is unknown. The aim of this study w...
